What to Expect with Braces: Your First Month

Getting braces is a big step toward a straighter, healthier smile, but the first few weeks can feel like unfamiliar territory.
Whether you're a teen, an adult, or a parent supporting someone through the process, knowing what to expect in that first month can make all the difference.
At Bronte Family Orthodontics, we help patients of all ages adjust to life with orthodontic braces in Milton, ON.
Here’s what you can expect during your first month, and some helpful tips to make it easier.
Week 1: Getting Used to the Feel
After your braces are placed, your teeth, lips, and cheeks may feel a little tender. This is completely normal.
Your mouth is adjusting to new equipment, and it may take a few days to settle in.
You might notice:
- Soreness when chewing
- Sensitivity in certain teeth
- Minor irritation on your inner cheeks or lips
What helps:
- Eat soft foods like soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, or smoothies
- Use orthodontic wax to cover sharp or uncomfortable areas
- Rinse with warm salt water to ease soreness
The discomfort usually eases within 3–5 days.
Week 2: Adjusting to Your Routine
By the second week, things start to feel more manageable. You'll begin to get used to the feeling of braces on your teeth, and eating becomes easier.
This is also a good time to fine-tune your oral hygiene routine.
Brushing and flossing around brackets takes a little more care, but it’s essential for keeping your teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment.
Helpful tools:
- Orthodontic toothbrushes or electric brushes
- Floss threaders or water flossers
- Travel toothbrush kit for on-the-go care
Week 3: Building Confidence
Once you're past the initial adjustment, you'll start to feel more confident.
You’ll figure out which foods to avoid, how to manage cleaning, and how to speak more comfortably with your braces.
At this point, many patients say they’ve stopped noticing the braces throughout the day, which means you’re well on your way to adjusting fully.
Week 4: Your First Check-In
Around the 10-12 week mark, you’ll come in for your first follow-up appointment.
Dr Aggarwal will check your progress, make any small adjustments, and answer any questions you have.
This is also a great time to bring up anything that’s bothering you - whether it's a wire poking, a loose bracket, or something that just feels off.
We’re here to make sure everything stays on track.
Tips for a Smooth First Month
- Stick to braces-friendly foods. Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy items.
- Stay consistent with hygiene. Clean teeth = happy gums and better results.
- Use wax early. Don’t wait for irritation—use wax preventatively.
- Be patient with yourself. It’s a learning curve, and that’s okay.
- Reach out if needed. If something doesn’t feel right, we’re just a call/email away.
